Zion's Trip

We have lived in the St. George area for 2 ½ years and have never gone to Zion’s National Park before.  Today we decided to take the plunge.  We loved it!!  Since one of us is handicapped, we took the opportunity to drive through the park. Everyone had fun driving through the tunnels and sitting in awe of the amazing beauty around us.  We hiked up some of the Canyon Overlook Trail, but it is not a trail for a one-legged man because it is mostly stairs.  It provided some great views even though we did not reach the

top.  Our 5 year old loved it though and kept begging to hike farther

Most trails are not little kid friendly, unless someone is carrying them, but the Pa’rus Trail and the first part of the Riverside Walk trail are paved and would be great for strollers.  If you plan on going to the park more than a couple of times, get a pass. 

There are many great places like Zion’s to visit while in the area. Zion’s park is about a 45 minute drive from St. George. Other area attractions that are close are Bryce Canyon National Park and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.  There are also a few State Parks in the area to visit  such as Snow Canyon State Park , Gunlock State Park, and Sand Hollow State Park to name a few. There is a bunch more.

So here is the question and you must answer ALL parts in order to get it right as well as the proper order in which the question is asked. Here goes! How many National Parks are in Utah? How Many National Parks are in the United States? How many National Monuments are in Utah? In what year was the first National park opened? Which State or states have the most National Parks?

To answer this question simply put the number separated by a comma then the next answer separated with a comma and so on, until you get to the state and just names the state.

Ok SO maybe it was much harder than everyone expected. There were only three winners but many close to having the correct answers. Most people only missed on of the questions. Here are the correct answers. Utah has only 5 official National Parks. The United States has 58 National Parks. Utah only has 7 National Monuments. The first National Park was opened in 1872, Yellowstone being the first. Both Alaska and California both have 8 National Parks.

This was a lot of fun to do and I had a great time learning more about our National Parks. I think after this class I will contiune to do this blog and have some trivia questions so we all can learn more about random things. What do you all think? Let me know if I should continue this.

Jacob Hamblin Trip

 On Saturday we went to the Jacob Hamblin home in Santa Clara.  It was free admission and the tour guides were great.  The girls loved to look at the old wagon, run across the expansive lawn, and see the old chairs and tools.  We loved to hear the stories about Jacob and how he was instrumental in founding Southern Utah.  The home was built in 1863 in replacement of the old fort that was washed away in a flood.  It sits on a hill looking out over the Santa Clara River and valley.  We heard lots of stories about this great pioneer, and about his wives and the struggles they faced.  Did you know Jacob was in the cowboy hall of fame? Visit the site to find out why.  It was a lovely place to visit for the afternoon.
